Dog Licenses

Dog licenses are issued in the Town Clerk’s Office.

All dogs of the age of 6 months or older must be licensed.

When a dog is acquired, the new owner has 30 days in which to license it.

To register your dog, an application must be made (Dog License Application)

  • A current certificate of rabies vaccination must be presented, with an original signature (not a copy of) the veterinarian.  A rabies tag is not acceptable.  Please do not expect the clerk to make calls to your veterinarian.
  • If a dog is neutered or spayed, that certificate must also be presented.
  • Fees for registering are $8.00 for a neutered or spayed dog, and $19.00 for an unaltered dog.  If a dog is not registered on time, a $1.00 per month late fee is assessed.  This is a statutory fee and must be collected.

Dog licenses cover the period from 1 July of the current calendar year to 30 June of the next year.  The month of June is when all dogs in CT are to be licensed to avoid a late registration penalty.  We begin renewing licenses for the coming year on June 1st.

Ledyard issues approximately 1200 dog licenses per year.  Registration reminders are posted through various media within the Town during the month of June.

If a dog’s tag is lost, a replacement is $0.50.  Also, if the dog was licensed for the current year in another CT town, a license for the same year will be issued for $0.50.  The paper license and tag from the other town must be presented as proof of registration.

We keep a record of the rabies expiration date and other pertinent information.

A license is a lost dog’s ticket home, and licensing provides vaccination and sterilization benefits for pets.

The Town Clerk's office is now offering dog licensing for renewals only starting on June 1, 2017.

For privacy and security reasons, in order to renew online, you must have the license year and dog tag number available in order to access the system.  You can locate this number either on the paper license or the actual dog tag on the dog.  In addition, if your dog’s rabies vaccination has expired since the last time you licensed your dog, you must provide documentation (tags do not qualify) from the veterinarian showing the new expiration date.  PLEASE BE CERTAIN THE CERTIFICATE YOU ARE UPLOADING INCLUDES A CURRENT (UNEXPIRED) RABIES EXPIRATION DATE.  (If you are renewing online, you must have the ability to scan these documents in any valid Windows' Image format, such as JPEG, TIFF, GIF, BMP or PNG.  Please note: PDF is not accepted.)  No licenses will be renewed without this information. If your dog is newly spayed or neutered, you must bring documentation from the veterinarian as proof. The fee for renewing the license of an unaltered dog is $19.00. The fee for renewing the license of a spayed or neutered dog is $8.00. Licenses not renewed by June 30th are subject to a penalty of $1.00 per month.   When renewing online any transaction will be subject to a $1.50 convenience fee which will be paid directly to Official Payments.
